Why The Rocky Horror Picture Show Still Gets Us Dancing After All These Years
There are cult films… and then there’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Nearly 50 years after its release, it’s still filling dancefloors, inspiring costumes, and bringing people together for one of the most gloriously weird, wonderful celebrations of self-expression ever put on screen.
So, why does this glittery, chaotic, totally over-the-top musical still capture hearts?
At its core, Rocky Horror is about freedom - the freedom to be yourself, to celebrate what makes you different, and to throw out the rulebook when it comes to gender, identity, and expectation. From the moment Dr. Frank-N-Furter struts onto the screen in heels and fishnets, it’s clear that this isn’t just a film - it’s a declaration that being bold, messy, and authentic is something to be proud of.
And then there’s the music. 🎶
Every song is made to move to - from the iconic “Time Warp” (which has literally been teaching generations of partygoers how to dance) to “Sweet Transvestite” and “Hot Patootie.” The rhythms are infectious, the lyrics unforgettable, and the sheer theatricality makes it perfect for letting go and having fun on the dance floor. It’s camp, it’s cheeky, and it’s completely irresistible.
That’s why we’re so excited to bring this energy into our next workshop! We’ll dive into The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s music, movement, and attitude, and then kick back for a screening of the film together.
So dust off your sequins, grab your friends, and get ready to do the Time Warp again - because some things never go out of style.
