Big Hair, Big Energy, Big Smiles!

If you’ve ever watched Hairspray or watched the show on stage, you’ll know the dancing is basically impossible to sit still through. It’s bold, high-energy and completely joyful - the kind of choreography that makes you want to jump up in your living room and start twisting around.

The style is rooted in 1960s social dances like The Twist and The Madison, mixed with classic musical theatre flair. It’s less about perfect technique and more about performance, personality, and really committing to the moment. Think strong shapes, playful footwork, lots of attitude and big ensemble numbers that feel vibrant and full of life. You can’t help but smile when you watch it!

What I love most about the dancing in Hairspray is that it feels accessible - you don’t have to be a trained dancer to join in. The moves are designed to be fun, expressive and full of character. It’s about big arms, strong shapes, playful footwork and loads of attitude. You can’t dance to songs like “You Can’t Stop the Beat” without going all in!

There’s also something really infectious about the way the ensemble dances together. The choreography feels vibrant and alive, with colourful costumes and that sense of everyone moving as one. It captures that 60s TV dance show energy perfectly, but with that extra musical theatre sparkle.

And that’s exactly why I’m so excited to say… I’m running a Hairspray-inspired dance workshop!

We’ll be learning some upbeat, show-style routines packed with that 1960s flair - nothing too intimidating, just lots of energy and good vibes. It’s completely family-friendly, so both adults and children can come along and get involved.

And because one dose of Hairspray is never enough, we’ll also be finishing the day with a special cinema screening of the film on the big screen. Dance first, then sit back and enjoy all the music, colour and feel-good moments afterwards. See you there!
