The Empowering World of Heels Dance
In the ever-evolving realm of dance, various genres continue to captivate audiences worldwide. One such style that has gained popularity and made its mark on the dance scene in recent years is heels. This unique and empowering form of expression blends the art of dance with the elegance and allure of high-heeled footwear. Let's dive into the fascinating world of heels dance and explore its origins, techniques, and the empowerment it brings to dancers.
Heels dance is a contemporary dance style that emerged in the late 20th century, evolving from the fusion of dance forms such as jazz, hip-hop, and even elements of LGBTQIA+ ballroom dance. The use of high heels in dance was initially popularised by iconic performers like Tina Turner and Beyoncé, who incorporated heels into their stage performances, adding a touch of sophistication and glamour to their routines.
Heels dance is characterised today, by fluid movements, sensuality, and a strong emphasis on showcasing the dancer's confidence. Dancers execute choreography while wearing high heels (although not essential!), which not only adds a visual element, but also challenges the dancer's balance and strength. The style often incorporates intricate footwork, spins, and body isolations, all while maintaining a seamless connection between the dancer and the music.
Heels dance isn't limited to a specific genre of music; dancers may perform routines to anything from R&B and pop to hip-hop and even Latin beats. This versatility allows for a wide range of creative expression, making heels dance an ever evolving and dynamic art form.
One of the most empowering aspects of heels dance is the confidence it instils in dancers. The act of dancing in this style not only demands physical strength, but also requires a deep connection with the body and a sense of self-assurance. Heels dance encourages individuals to celebrate their bodies and express themselves in a way that goes beyond traditional dance forms.
Heels has become a platform for self-discovery and empowerment, offering individuals a space to break free from societal norms and embrace their unique identities. It fosters a supportive community where dancers uplift and inspire each other, creating an environment where everyone can shine. That is why I love to teach heels so much! Seeing the surprise and joy in someone’s eyes when they unlock a connection to their own inner confidence, confidence that they didn’t even know was there, that is just phenomenal! Especially for non-dancers trying a heels workshop and experienced dancers alike. Heels channels something within that you take into every other
facet of your life...
